Project Croatia in the 20th century is funded by Croatian Science Foundation and hosted at Croatian Institute of History. The main purpose of the project is to concentrate on topics from the 20th century Croatian history that had previously been less researched. With the insight into the less researched or completely unresearched sources along with the modern methodologies will enable to verify, improve and change the current knowledge about various regimes and political and ideological systems that existed in Croatia throughout the most of the 20th century. "Modern approach" means that the contemporary Croatian society opens new questions about the Croatian history and seeks new answers.
The aim of the project is to research political, economical, social and cultural developments in Croatia from the collapse of Austro-Hungarian Empire in 1918 to the break-up of Yugoslavia in the early 1990s. This period includes around 70 years of Croatian history. The research will give attention to all parts of Croatia, it will cover all Croatian historical lands and pay attention to its population. The project includes various topics: ideology and policy; national and religious questions; culture, as well as the role of the press and sport in the social life. The project will concentrate a wide range of events and longer processes: formation and spreading of national and political ideas and their realisations through the activities of political parties and - during World War II - through the actions of various combating formations, as well as through the activities of state security after 1945. The project will also reconstruct everyday life and the question of identity of various groups within the Croatian society. Biographies of certain individuals will also be the included in the project, in order to show how some individuals were treated by various regimes. In other words, the project will research the consequences of World War I on the population in Croatia and the activities of state authorities of Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes/Yugoslavia, Independent State of Croatia, Federal People's Republic of Yugoslavia/Socialist Federative Republic of Yugoslavia, and also of Republic of Croatia with the emphasis on the principle of freedom of nations and individuals and including the influence of the foreign powers. Most of the topics included in the project will cover Croatia as a whole, but some historians will also pay particular attention to some Croatian regions, especially Dalmatia. One historian will concentrate on the neighbouring Bosnia and Herzegovina and the role of the local Catholic Church. In order to achieve the better understanding of some historical events and processes in Croatia they will be treated in the context of similar developments in the other neighbouring and other European countries.
During the first year involved scholars will provide a detailed insight into the available literature and availability of documents in Croatian archives, archives of other former Yugoslav republics and other states. Finding of documents and other sources, their xeroxing and classifying of documents and other sources, their analysis and preparation for publishing of articles and other publications. Beside, during the first year a public presentation of available results in the research of the Croatian 20th century history will be organized.
Uključeni istraživači tijekom prve godine detaljno će istražiti postjeću literaturu i dostupnost arhivske građe u arhivskim ustanovama, kako u Hrvatskoj tako i inozemstvu.
Research in archives during the second year of the project will include archival sources presently kept in Belgrade, Ljubljana, Sarajevo and Split. Moreover some researchers will work in National archives in Washington D.C. and in the Vatican archives. Senior researchers will publish a total of 8 scientific articles, covering topics on administrative, political, economic and cultural development of Croatia in the 20th century.
Istraživanje u arhivima tijekom druge projektne godine uključivat će rad u arhivima u Beogradu, Ljubljani, Sarajevu i Splitu.
Xeroxing and classifying of documents and other sources, their analysis and preparation for publishing of articles and other publications. Analysis of literature and research in archives (Croatian state archive, archives in Skopje and Podgorica). Publishing of new articles. In this year involved scholars will publish 8 new articles.
In the last year of the project besides finishing the investigation and writing final studies we will organize an international scientific conference with 20 speakers (14 researchers from our project plus 6 distinguished guest speakers). Immediately after the finish of the project we will publish a collection of scientific articles under the title: Croatia in 20th century: modernization in the pluralism and monism circumstences.
